Uncomfortable with handicapped in the pool?

I am almost without words after reading this article about wounded vets driven from a public pool. Imagine having barely survived the horror of war in defense of your country only to be shunned when you return home because of your injuries. The debate isn’t about the war being right or wrong (I say it is dead wrong) but about the respect toward those that are told to fight and will sacrifice on behalf of those that may or may not appreciate their bravery. I think the outraged sentiment of most people is obvious but also true is the almost unbelievable sentiment of the grossly insensitive and intolerant. combat wounded vet Uncomfortable with handicapped in the pool?

However, beyond the veteran angle are the basic feelings of people about the handicapped in general no matter how they became that way. Would any group of handicapped people make you uncomfortable enough to rudely voice that concern and demand your greedy pleasures? We long ago learned that skin colour was nothing to fear even in a pool. Perhaps we’ve learned almost nothing.

And now I’m curious about the Icelandic response to a similar situation. I wonder also because Iceland has a passion for swimming pools, spas, and hot pots that can be found in great numbers and in the most remote areas. A spa culture that prides itself on a healthy lifestyle and cultural openness. I think I’ll research this a bit from several angles. I hope that I’ll find that the Viking is more understanding and logical. The Íslendingur is highly fashionable but I hope that sense of fashion is less selfish than what I read about certain folks in the linked news report.
