I have no moral objections to Sunday shopping, shop till you drop if that is your hobby. It isn’t mine but go ahead and do it if 6 days isn’t enough. But one predicted side effect was true, the fruit market has disappeared. The Sunday rules stated that with a certain percentage of fresh food a market fruitmarket Death of the fruit marketcould open on Sundays. Typical supermarkets were closed and fruit markets were open. Large and small, the fruit market was a nice alternative to the bland and ordinary. Even quaint since most were independent affairs that had a calming uniqueness that no supermarket could match. Most of their business was on Sunday since they were typically slightly higher priced and you couldn’t buy processed crappy food with your apples. So with the rise of seven day shopping and the ultra cheap sub par market we got the fall of the corner fruit market.

The whole Sunday thing was to calm the frantic nature of our modern busy society. Now you can shop 24 hours 7 days a week and yet I don’t see any change in the attitudes but only see the original issues worse than ever. Nobody admits to having enough time for anything or to having enough money. The traffic is not better but is worse. Little has changed except I do miss the fruit and flower shop. Well, a lot has changed, they were not the changes that were argued.

I hear that Iceland has recently discovered the weekend farmers market. It is really catching on. Way to go Iceland, enjoy it and don’t let the big commercial interests ruin it for you.
