This article from IcelandReview is about the new methane powered taxis for Reykjavík. A new pipeline was constructed from the regional landfill directly to a filling station in the city. Sweet.. Powering your garbage trucks and taxi fleet from the local garbage sounds like a good thing. In one more generation we’ll have developed the better system and then put the gas to a more efficient use.
The first 30 hydrogen powered cars are also being delivered this year. The hydrogen fuel is produced locally using 100% clean power. Beside clean burning fuels you’ll want to keep the production of those fuels as clean as possible too, something that ethanol/biofuel isn’t so good at (but do harvest the fuel from waste).
After a little more digging around I’ve found that the city garbage trucks have been running on methane for a while. Brilliant to power the trucks from the garbage they are hauling. I guess that there is surplus gas and can now export it to the city for use in cars. Now that is a smart move.
Thank you for dropping by Blogging Reykjavik . Net. Always wonderful that other people appreciate what we are trying to do with the network and especially are interested in Reykjavik and Iceland.
A bit more info. For a few years a few hydrogen buses have been driving around Reykjavik and there is a hydrogen fuel station.
Did two posts about it last year, then they had been running for a while:

Best of luck with your travel preparations. Please drop by bloggingreykjavik.net again and leave messages comments / hang out / ask questions – despite the random ramblings of the site I am really quite knowledgeable about my own country. If you feel like adding the site to the links on your site that would be much appreciated, if not guard it as your own secret
Great blog you have.
Thanks for the comment! I’m thrilled to get feedback of any kind and especially from the land that is beckoning me. I think I left my heart in Iceland sometime in a past life. Just as you were writing the comment I was scouring IcelandAir for deals. I will be coming there hopefully very soon. I don’t care if it is dark and gloomy or if the sun keeps me up all night.
I know about the hydrogen buses, I hope they remain past the grant money and expand. Of course we have to encourage people to use them more. I’ll certainly be riding one when I’m there. The tourist card that includes buses, museums, and the pools is what I think I’ll be doing since money and luxury is not what I have.
I’ll be visiting Blogging Reykjavík for sure. Look out for the crazy Canuck that is already in love with Iceland.
