This is the 2007 summer solstice. Otherwise known as the first day of summer. Actually it can be thought of as the midway point of summer since the days will now get shorter. Iceland more than most countries really notices this day since if you expect to get any sleep you will want heavy curtains to block out the sun that is still shining after midnight. How cool is that.. With the flip side being a lot of darkness in winter that is only broken by a brief glimpse of the sun at lunchtime. balance..
Tonight is also rather interesting if you are further south and will have darkness. The planet Mars is at a close approach to earth and will shine brightly near the moon. Check it out. Look toward the sunset and you will also see a very bright Venus sinking low in the sky.
