After a few weeks of heavy snow and then bitter cold we had the big thaw. It took a week to melt the meter of snow (3 feet to you Yanks). People and animals acted as if Spring was here. Actually the animals were very hungry and took advantage of soft ground. It was like a zoo around here with every kind of creature running around. It was the people that were fooled.
So I made my annual bet that winter was not over and we’d be seeing the cold and snow once again before Spring really comes. People imagine that once it gets to +15C that it can’t possibly turn cold again. Over night it turned back to winter. From +15C to -10C all of a sudden. All that melt water in the ground quickly froze the earth. And then it snowed. Predictions of a trace of snow turned into about 10cms. Not a great deal of snow but certainly more than a trace.
