Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Well, another lap around the sun is complete. For Icelanders this is a big day.
It is the global fascination with midnight on that day that I don’t get. 1st January and midnight is arbitrary and could easily be any other time. There isn’t any celestial mark that says New Year. So for me I like the whole day and don’t put all my energy into a precise moment.
But I’m grateful that we’ve made it around the sun one more time. Who knows how much longer we can do that…
The ancients were more concerned about the seasons and the solstice to worry about what moment they would call a whole cycle. Each transitional point such as a solstice might be a ‘year’ since the last instance of that event.
So have a merry new year and warm thoughts to everyone. Wish you were here. Wish I was there.
